Piperacillin and tazobactam
Type of Medication: Antibiotic
Indications: Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia respiratory infections. Activity against H influenzae
Side Effects: Hypersensitivity reaction, haemolytic anaemia, nephritis erythema multiforme, Steven-Johnson syndrome, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, paraesthesia, diarrhoea, colitis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, increased LFT.
Route of administration: Adult (Intravenous)
Dose:Tazocin given as 4.5 gm tds
Administration: Tazocin can be diluted with 20 ml water and infused over 3 to 5 minutes or reconstituted in 50 ml saline and given over 30 minutes

Dose:300 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses, max: 4g tds
Examples of some Drug Interactions
Interacting drug: Methotrexate – increased risk of toxicity
Interacting drug: Muscle relaxants – enhanced by piperacillin
Interacting drug: Probenecid – reduced piperacillin excretion
