Taurine

Type of Medication: Amino acid

Indications: In combination with Ursodeoxycholic acid to avoid taurine deficiency. Not licensed in the UK as it is considered a food supplement, but can be prescribed on a FP10.

Side Effects:

Route of administration: Adult (Oral)

Dose:500 mg two to three times a day (30mg/kg/day)

Administration: Take half an hour before any meal or at bedtime

Route of administration: Paediatric (Oral)

Dose:30mg/kg/day in two to three divided doses up to a maximum of 500mg tds

Administration: Take half an hour before any meal or at bedtime. The 500 mg capsules can be opened if necessary and dispensed in water and a fraction of the dose given as necessary. Alternatively, young patients may be prescribed an alternate day regimen to simplify the dose.
