Tigecycline
Type of Medication: Antibiotic
Indications: Treatment of respiratory exacerbations caused by susceptible organisms. Has activity against a broad range of gram positive and gram negative organisms including Mycobacterium abscessus, MRSA, MSSA, Achromobacter xylosoxidans , Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, anorexia, bilrubinaemia, dizziness, headache, prolonged PT and APPT, rash, pruritus and injection site reactions, elevated LFT, hypoglycaemia. Less commonly pancreatitis, hypoproteinaemia and antibiotic associated colitis. StevensJohnson syndrome, photosensitivity, benign intracranial hypertension
Route of administration: Adult (Intravenous)
Dose:100 mg stat loading dose followed by 50 mg every 12 hours
Administration: Give in 100 ml of sodium chloride 0.9% or dextrose 5% over 30 – 60 minutes. High incidence of nausea(30%) and vomiting (20%)give regular anti-emetics with treatment course.

Route of administration: Paediatric (Intravenous)
Dose:12-18 years: 100 mg stat loading dose followed by 50 mg every 12 hours. Children 8–11 years: 1.2 mg/kg twice daily (maximum 50 mg twice daily).
Administration: Not licensed for use in children. Avoid in children under 8 years due to the risk of teeth staining.

Interacting drug: anticoagulants – prolonged prothrombin time in patients taking warfarin
Interacting drug: ciclosporin: increased ciclosporin serum concentrations may occur
