Ursodeoxycholic acid

Type of Medication: Bile acid

Indications: Improving bile flow in patients with liver impairment

Side Effects: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, pruritis, gallstone calcification

Route of administration: Adult (Oral)

Dose:20mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses with or after food. Up to a maximum of 450mg tds.

Administration: In Leeds we prescribe a combination of ursodeoxycholic acid with taurine. Avaliable as 150mg tablets, 250mg capsules and 250 mg/5ml suspension

Dose:20mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses, with or after food. Up to a maximum of 450mg tds.

Examples of some Drug Interactions

Interacting drug: ciclosporin

Increases ciclosporin plasma concentrations – unpredictable and does not occur in all patients.
